Nikola Govorko asked:
Before you decide to buy a cell phone you should first decide which service is right for you, regular or prepaid cell phones service. Both options have positive and negative sides to them.
Here we will try to list the major benefits as well as drawbacks of prepaid cell phones.
Benefits
1) Prepaid service is great for cell phone newbies. It is much simpler and you can learn as you go. It is very easy for a new cell phone user to go overboard and overcharge hers/his account.
No such problem with prepaid service, if you want to talk more you need to purchase minutes before you talk, so you are %100 in control. Also it is very easy to find a basic phone if you are just starting or do not need the extra options like camera, internet, MMS and many others.
On the other hand if you need them, fine you can still use them.
2) You can give them as present to your mother, father, grandmother, teenager kid or a friend. They can use them often, very rare or in emergencies. In any way, you always stay in contact.
Would you like to be able to contact your teenage daughter/son and know in an instant where and how are they? Well with prepaid service you can do just that and do not have to worry about getting an enormous monthly bill.
3) If you need cell phone but are not a regular user you can save a lot with prepaid cell phone. There will not be high monthly cell phone bills for minutes you paid for but did not use.
If you need it just in case of emergency then it is the right option for you.
4) Most of the regular contracts are now at least two years, so if you do not want to tie yourself up for that long, prepaid service is for you. No contract here.
Drawbacks or why prepaid service may not be right for you
1) If you are a heavy cell phone user, you will be much better off signing a contract. Regular monthly contracts have much better prices per minutes then prepaid service.
However make sure to think about when you will be using your minutes the most and then decide on a deal.
2) If you demand all of the latest features from your cell phone and plan on using most of them, you are probably better off with monthly paid service again.
Prepaid cell phones have many advanced features but service providers often reserve the latest few for their most valued costumers.
Which service is better? Only you can decide that. But the deciding factor should be how many minutes you plan to spend talking each month.

Ron Wicker asked:
When someone signs up for a new cell carrier plan, they often get a phone at a free or reduced rate with their contract. The cell phones that come with a carrier contract are almost always locked cell phones. This means that they only work with that specific carrier’s Subscriber Identification Module, or SIM, card, a microchip inserted into the phone to activate service. To put it simply, that person can only use that phone while still subscribed to that carrier’s network and, if they want to change carriers, they have to get a new phone.
An unlocked cell phone will work with any carrier’s SIM card. If an individual changes carriers, they simply have to insert a new SIM card into their unlocked cell phone, and the phone will be able to access that carrier’s network.
Cell phone carriers use locked cell phones to their advantage. By locking the cell phones and offering them as part of their contract, they retain more customers. The customer cannot change carriers without getting a new phone and possibly spending more money. Because certain carriers may have contracts with specific cell phone manufacturers, a customer may not be able to get the phone they want with the plan they have. The carriers argue that locking the phones helps them offer the phones at a discounted rate. Still, these phones leave the customer with few options.
An unlocked phone, on the other hand, can be used for years, even if the customer decides to change carriers. The customer has more options as to the type and style of cell phone they choose because they are not pinned down to the phones offered by their carrier. While the customer will have to buy the unlocked phone outright, perhaps spending more money initially, over time, they actually save more money. Plus, unlocked cell phones are much more convenient.
Unlocked cell phones are offered by third parties and are not connected with the carrier companies. On occasion, a cell carrier will unlock a locked phone after a period of time, but these previously locked phones don’t always work with all SIM cards, even once they’re unlocked. As unlocked cell phones become more popular, the overall price of phones should come down.
The U.S. is far behind the rest of the worl in unlocked cell phone sales. In other countries, the majority of cell phones sold are unlocked. In the United States, the majority are sold with contracts and are locked into a certain carrier. This is slowly changing and within a decade unlocked phones shouls surpass locked phone sales.

David Kraft asked:
Cell phones that are purchased from wireless providers are automatically “locked” to that network. What that means is that if you decide to switch to a different network/carrier, you will be unable to take your phone with you to the new network, despite the high costs you might have paid for it originally. The better option is to purchase an unlocked cell phone in the first place, which will help you avoid this potential problem and also comes with some other benefits.
There are several benefits to buying an unlocked cell phone from an alternate source; that is, a phone that was not purchased directly from your carrier.
First, unlocked phones give you freedom from contracts. Cellular providers often offer phones at a discount in exchange for a customer signing a contract with the provider. Therefore, if you decide to switch carriers before your contract expires, they will charge you a large cancellation fee, usually around $250-$500. When you have an unlocked phone you can avoid having to purchase a phone locked to a particular network and will not have to sign a contract to get service from a specific provider.
Also, you can usually find more phones available when looking at unlocked phones. Cell phone providers’ stores usually carry 20-30 phones that they make available to their customers. The unlocked market is literally full of hundreds of phones, meaning you can essentially get any phone you want with any feature you want. The only thing to be aware of here is that your carrier of choice has a network capable of using all the features available on a particular phone.
Further, not only will your unlocked phone be one you can take with you to another domestic carrier, but should you travel overseas you will be able to take your unlocked cell phone with you; simply pop your new prepaid SIM card into your phone. Doing this will save you a small fortune in international roaming charges, and save you from having to purchase a new phone while in your temporary location.
Finally, there is a much bigger market for reselling an unlocked phone than there is for phones that are locked to a network. When you decide to upgrade to a new phone, you will have much more luck selling your unlocked phone to another user than you will selling a phone that is locked to a particular network, meaning you can recoup some of your initial costs for the phone after you’ve used it.
Unlocked cell phones provide their users a lot of freedom and peace of mind as they are not locked in to contracts. However, you must be aware of where you purchase your phone from as some vendors are better than others. Try to stick to reputable dealers when purchasing an unlocked phone. A good way to measure the credibility of a seller is whether or not they offer a warranty on their unlocked phones. If they do, you should have much more confidence buying from them.
